Welcome to the York Courses Web site

The trouble is knowing where exactly to start. Anyone can figure out how to write a simple line of HTML, but creating a functional website that people will use is more complex. The many rules of web development are also a bit more challenging.

They had to set up scripts to take blurbs from the featured articles and request dynamic content from the site. It takes a ton of work, but everything comes together piece by piece to create a functional website.

Web development is one of the most straightforward jobs to get into — if you can figure out programming. Not all jobs are for everyone, and there will be those who may struggle to wrap their heads around code.

For some people, becoming a web developer will be a breeze. For others, it may never quite click with you. But for most people, a little dedication and a lot of practice will go a long way. The process of becoming a web developer is much less convoluted than other jobs, and there are more paths available to get you on the right track.

You can take various paths to become a web developer, and your own experience will present unique challenges. But generally, most web development careers follow a similar form. Will you be going to college? What sort of degree are you pursuing? Certification or not, will you take a paid or free online course?

Or are you going all-in to teach yourself using only online resources? You can put this off as you experiment with different aspects of web development, but you need to choose before pursuing a narrowed study.

Better yet, the bulk of the content is free. While there are premium features, the courses themselves are fully available for free. Need some more advanced courses, or ones in more specific skills? Udemy might be the right site for you. There are thousands of courses made by professional instructors, and some even allow you to become accredited. Git can be very difficult to understand if you have no prior technical skills.

Each certification path is estimated to take around hours, and you can choose from a variety of different skills to learn. Any developer knows that finding documentation for dozens of different tools can be annoying. DevDocs is a free and open source tool that combines all this documentation into a single, easy-to-navigate app.

The video-based learning platform also includes interactive challenges. Coursera has one unique advantage unlike other learning platforms : You can use it to earn both certification and full college degrees from technical universities. Egghead contains helpful, bite-sized lessons on a variety of development subjects. There are several dozen topics to choose from, each with even more articles covering every development aspect you can imagine.

You can also find courses offered by professional instructors. While not a series of courses, CSS-Tricks offers high-quality articles on frontend web development. Udacity is a tech-focused provider of paid online courses. Along with web development, you can take highly specialized classes, such as cybersecurity , data science, business, and more.

Get involved in open source projects that may introduce you to people who can help you get a paid job. Advertise your business wherever you can. Ready to dive into a new career field? Web development is an excellent choice for people who love to try new skills and are prepared to take their learning into their own hands.

Difference between drupal 6 and 8

Getting started with a Drupal 8 theme

However, since there are such few organizations available, given the large amounts of resources necessary to monitor an entire platform along with all its modules, the market for available LTS providers is very small. Minuscule, in fact, compared to the developer base available to current versions of the platforms.

Not to mention an extremely expensive one, accompanied by an extremely limited base of Drupal companies capable of providing LTS services. For example, all of the new features being built for Drupal which make the platform not only easier to use, from both the administrative standpoint and also the user standpoint.

An organization with a Drupal 7, or lower, instance which wishes to employ certain features will not be able to obtain those features simply by adding and wiring an existing module into the Drupal site. Instead, such features will have to be built from scratch so-to-speak into the existing Drupal 7 or lower project.

In fact, most organizations, even if they could afford to have an LTS Drupal agency provider build the features for them, would quickly find the worth of those features diminishing significantly over time — perhaps, even before the newly-requested features had been completed. All in all, it makes significant financial sense to put an organization's resources into later versions of Drupal. Assuming the above facts make sense, and have convinced any Drupal 7 application owners reading this to perform the Drupal 7 to 8 or 9 upgrade, the next matter to consider is whether the move should be made to Drupal 8 or Drupal 9.

In other words, one does not need to move from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8… and then from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9. The same results in fact, more efficient results can be had with a Drupal 7 to 9 migration. Reason being that if you upgraded from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 then you would be almost immediately upgrading from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 and while the move from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 is a ripple in the pond compared to the ocean of difference from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 or Drupal 9.

So a word from the wise, any Drupal agency , or developer, suggesting the move must be completed sequentially should be removed from the list of potential candidates for the job. Another benefit of moving from Drupal 7 to 9 is that it extends the EOL of the then-upgraded project significantly, meaning that, once you are on Drupal 9 the move to future versions will be a piece of cake compared to this current jump.

First and foremost, it's important to understand that the move from Drupal 7 to the newer versions of Drupal is a significant undertaking — an undertaking which should not be attempted by anyone other than an agency whose sole focus is Drupal. For reasons as simple as debunking rumors you may have heard, like the fact that it may be wiser to wait to move from Drupal 7 to later versions because later versions are making the move easier to accomplish.

Then there were the Drupal companies who decided they would continue to pursue Drupal design and development or who morphed into agencies which if they had not previously done so concentrated on Drupal, only. And there are companies, like Thinkbean, who already were, and plan to remain Drupal only agencies. Well, this post could continue for a significant number of pages extolling the virtues of the Drupal web platform versus other web platforms…as well as the agencies capable of performing Drupal development to the same level they may have once been able to.

A recently-delivered Drupal development project has seen the Adaptive team successfully migrate more than 5, nodes and 33, document files from an old Drupal 6 website into a new Drupal 8 build. The new website for the Joint Office of Gas Transporters - www. Adaptive has worked with the Joint Office JO team since the start of , initially supporting and hosting their previous Drupal 6 website. In early , we began discussions with the JO about redeveloping the website on the latest Drupal 8 platform. The key objectives of the new website were to:. In addition to these aims, we also had the challenge of migrating large volumes of nodes and document files from the old site, while retaining the relational structure of the content that was stored using the Drupal Books module. While various tools and modules exist in Drupal 8 to support the migration of general content, we found that functionality for migrating Book content while retaining the Book structure itself was lacking.

Users of Drupal version 6 should hurry to migrate to versions 7 or 8 if they major differences in how version 6 and higher versions of the CMS operate.

Why migrate from Drupal 6 to Drupal 8

This is a bit of an update to our update to PHP 7 that we did awhile back. Last week we contacted all of our clients to announce our PHP 7. If there won't be any more security support for PHP 7.

The idea was to understand what it looks like to operate in this industry: if the traditional office still reigns supreme, how many colleagues they work alongside, and if they share their expertise by creating original content. The majority of respondents were employed in a non-freelance capacity, i. Of these, twice as many worked for an agency — rather than client-siderepresenting the greater proliferation of agency-side web design positions.

Taking the pandemic into account, however, the ratio could also speak to how the growing appetite for digital services is benefitting agencies, while other sectors comprised of client-side organisations have faced financial challenges and thus implemented staff cutbacks. This could point to ongoing uncertainties around job security in the present climate. Lone wolves, mavericks, Han Solos…whatever you call it, most web designers work alone , either freelance or as part of a wider organisation.

Blogging is by far the favoured platform, possibly thanks to its associated SEO benefits, or its usefulness for displaying a range of expertise.

No real shocker here… the preferred part of the web design process is, well, the designing part. We can see that our respondents are drawn to the exciting moments, when all the initial project ideas are bubbling around, waiting to be shaped and sketched into early concepts. It is useful though to bear in mind that, as this survey was conducted by a web host and reseller hosting company, the web hosting figures may be somewhat skewed. Yet surprisingly, only half of our respondents have their own website to generate new leads , showcase services and target relevant local searches, which substantially limits opportunities and hampers any future-proofing efforts.

Lastly, we gauged the atmosphere, looking into levels of optimism around work availability and security, how enthusiastic web designers are feeling, and what the future might hold. This implies that digital experiences are predicted to continue dominating the marketplace, as the shift to online retailing and events maintains its foothold, correlating with wider industry forecasts of steady financial growth.

We can see that web designers must be multi-skilled and multidisciplinary, with most organisations providing web maintenance, hosting and development, as well as SEO. They are feeling confident in their job security and that work will become easier to acquire soon.

In fact, the survey shows that web designers have greater expectations, especially when it comes to freedom over ways of working. In conclusion, the survey outlines a thriving industry in real demand, but also in which competition is fierce. The standards and requirements are likewise high, and effort is being exerted on skills development and self-promotion.

But at the end of the day, web designers are feeling empowered to have a say over how they work and are hopeful about their careers. The respondents to this survey are self-described web designers with whom we invited to take part in via a number of different channels including email and social media. Download your own copy of our Web Designer Survey. I have to ask, where are most of these web designers located? At least, low from my point of view.

Matthew Telfer. From finding work to getting paid; the latest web design statistics and trends. Creating your own content Here we asked if respondents used any platforms to create original content and share their ideas. Section 2: Getting paid In this section we asked respondents about how much they are earning and how hard they are having to work for it.

This is a tale of two extremes. If we then compare full-time workers across client-side, agency-side and freelance, we can see that web designers tend to make higher wages through agency employment, due to a combination of more hours and better hourly rates: As an industry, these findings place web design behind many other professional services. Again, this may be in part symptomatic of strong competition or obscurity around the value of web design work, both from professionals and their clients.

More on WordPress later. Section 4: Your work Now to the nitty-gritty of the type of work our respondents take on and how much they typically charge for it.

The most common jobs are now WordPress-powered sites , even outranking the good old fashioned HTML brochure site, backing up how most respondents deemed WordPress development skills important. Section 5: Trends Lastly, we gauged the atmosphere, looking into levels of optimism around work availability and security, how enthusiastic web designers are feeling, and what the future might hold. Final thoughts Our Web Designer Survey set out to learn what working life is like for the sector, how designers on the ground have been affected by the upheavals of the past couple of years and how they feel about the future.

How I landed my first JavaScript development job and got 6 figures for it, without having to apply to a single job. Yes, the jobs came to me. At some weeks I was doing interviews over the phone; I ended up getting a couple of offers both offering 6-figures per year in compensation. Here is how I did it:. They got me my first computer This was not a mistake , but then they put me in a beginners course to learning computers. Turns out, it was a programming course.

You're talking about becoming a professional web or software developer, and this requires many other skills beyond just knowing a programming language —JavaScript or otherwise. Let's take a look at some of the most common roles you can get with just JavaScript, along with the complementary skills you need to learn.

Front-end developers are responsible for building the visible, user-facing parts of a website or application. They work closely with designers, taking a visual design and transforming it using code to produce the interface that end users see and interact with in web browsers.

Other topics you'll need to learn about for this role are accessibility and performance. The line between front-end developer and front-end engineer is often blurred in the industry, but it's useful to know that not all front-end roles are the same. Front-end engineers also work on the front end of web applications, but this role tends to be less visual, and more focused on the application logic. They might use an existing component library which takes care of all the markup and CSS, or they might not touch this at all, only working on things like fetching and manipulating data, and managing application state.

As such, this is a much more JavaScript-heavy role, and advanced JavaScript skills are necessary. You'll usually be expected to know at least one JavaScript framework like React or Vue.

This role involves working on both the front and back end. Can you really do this if you only know JavaScript? If you find a company with the right tech stack. Look for companies who use Node. If you know the JavaScript language already, there are a few extra concepts and frameworks you'll need to learn, but it's still all just JavaScript.

Full-stack development is about breadth of knowledge. You're expected to understand multiple layers of the stack, but not to the same level of expertise as a developer that specializes in one particular area. That said, most full-stack developers do have a slight preference for either front or back-end development. If you like to be able to do a bit of everything, you'll probably enjoy full-stack development.

It's also useful if you ever want to work for a small startup, where wearing multiple hats is often necessary. Back-end developers work only on server-side code. It's not common to find back-end developers who only know JavaScript, but it is possible to find roles focused on Node. You'll need the skills of any other back-end developer: the ability to design and build APIs, deploy services with AWS or similar cloud infrastructure, and have strong database knowledge. It's well suited to data streaming or chat-based applications, but is also often used for simple web back ends serving JSON APIs, or applications using serverless functions.

It's possible to go freelance as any of the types of JavaScript developer mentioned above, but you'll often need more of a generalist skill set —and the ability to jump into many different kinds of projects that may use different tech stacks or conventions than you're used to.

If you want to freelance but offer more than just front-end services, a common request for back-end work is often for WordPress sites, and that means PHP may be a more useful skill to learn than Node.
