How to go to another web page using javascript

If you're seeing this message, it means we're having trouble loading external resources on our website. To log in and use all the features of Khan Academy, please enable JavaScript in your browser. Donate Login Sign up Search for courses, skills, and videos. Computer programming. Get ready to make your webpages interactive.

It's a computer. A programming language is our way of communicating with software. The people who use programming languages are often called programmers or developers. The things we tell software using a programming language could be to make a webpage look a certain way, or to make an object on the page move if the human user takes a certain action.

So, when a web designer is given an end goal like "create a webpage that has this header, this font, these colors, these pictures, and an animated unicorn walking across the screen when users click on this button," the web designer's job is to take that big idea and break it apart into tiny pieces, and then translate these pieces into instructions that the computer can understand -- including putting all these instructions in the correct order or syntax.

When you open a web page, your browser fetches the HTML and other programming languages involved and interprets it. But before moving on to JavaScript and other true languages, you need to know the basics of HTML and CSS, as they are on the front end of every web page and application.

Let's start with good ol' HTML. HTML is at the core of every web page, regardless the complexity of a site or number of technologies involved. It's an essential skill for any web professional. It's the starting point for anyone learning how to create content for the web. And, luckily for us, it's surprisingly easy to learn. Let me show you what I mean. Take a look at the article below.

Notice that closing tags look exactly the same as opening tags, except there is a forward slash after the left angle bracket. Here's an example:. Using HTML, you can add headings, format paragraphs, control line breaks, make lists, emphasize text, create special characters, insert images, create links, build tables, control some styling, and much more. This programming language dictates how the HTML elements of a website should actually appear on the frontend of the page.

HTML provides the raw tools needed to structure content on a website. CSS, on the other hand, helps to style this content so it appears to the user the way it was intended to be seen. These languages are kept separate to ensure websites are built correctly before they're reformatted.

To show you what CSS does to a website, look at the following two screenshots. Notice all the content is still there, but the visual styling isn't. This is what you might see if the style sheet doesn't load on the website, for whatever reason. Now, here's what the same web page looks like with CSS added. Put simply, CSS is a list of rules that can assign different properties to HTML tags, either specified to single tags, multiple tags, an entire document, or multiple documents.

That's where the word "cascading" comes into play. Think about a waterfall -- as water cascades down the fall, it hits all the rocks on the way down, but only the rocks at the bottom affect where it will end up flowing.

In the same way, the last defined style sheet informs my browser which instructions have precedence. To learn the specifics of coding in CSS, I'll point you again to the free classes and resources on codecademy. But for now, let's talk a bit about JavaScript. Nowadays, JavaScript is supported by all modern web browsers and is used on almost every site on the web for more powerful and complex functionality. JavaScript is a logic-based programming language that can be used to modify website content and make it behave in different ways in response to a user's actions.

Common uses for JavaScript include confirmation boxes, calls-to-action, and adding new identities to existing information. In short, JavaScript is a programming language that lets web developers design interactive sites. Most of the dynamic behavior you'll see on a web page is thanks to JavaScript, which augments a browser's default controls and behaviors. One example of JavaScript in action is boxes that pop up on your screen. Think about the last time you entered your information into an online form and a confirmation box popped up, asking you to press "OK" or "Cancel" to proceed.

That was made possible because of JavaScript -- in the code, you'd find an "if Another example of JavaScript in action is a slide-in call-to-action CTA , like the ones we put on our blog posts, which appears on the bottom right-hand side of your screen when you scroll past the end of the sidebar. Here's what it looks like:. JavaScript is particularly useful for assigning new identities to existing website elements, according to the decisions the user makes while visiting the page.

It's also used to build mobile apps and create server-based applications. If you want to learn more about JavaScript, codecademy has free online courses you can take, too. The hardest part of coding is getting started -- but once you learn the basics, it'll be easier to learn more advanced programming languages. And if you ever feel overwhelmed, head over to hackertyper.

In The Phoenix Project , coauthored by Gene Kim , Kevin Behr , and George Spafford , readers get a fascinating peek into the IT jungle of a large organization, where the dynamics in play are the same as those experienced in the wilds of UX. It's an understatement to say that this book is a "must-read" for UX designers, developers, and product managers.

It's a "read now and don't come back until you're finished" kind of book on IT, DevOps and helping businesses succeed.

I've led the design of user experience for an end-to-end continuous delivery solution. My close colleague and product manager exhorted me to read his favorite book, The Phoenix Project, in the spirit of getting to know our users—the enterprise DevOps professionals. With an open mind, I jumped into the world Kim imagined and since then have chosen to remain there.

For those who haven't read The Phoenix Project, I won't spoil the fun by describing what the book introduces to readers. In what follows, I have selected and reordered 13 axiomatic statements about IT that apply equally well to UX. After the comparison, I pinpoint what I think an organization can do to bring their UX practices on par with those of IT.

The inner workings of IT are mostly unknown to other departments, aside from when there's a problem. This is the case for UX, too, given the outcomes it produces through design decisions.

As every competitive company today relies on providing service through some form of software, so too must the competency to improve the experience of using the service be at the core of their expertise. For an entire company to gain competency in UX, it requires educating product managers, support, engineers, and marketing teams. Caution, though: UX is not intended as a generalized topic but as practices specific to each department that are relevant to the type of decisions they need to make.

This includes the HR department, which must be familiar with roles in UX and its careers paths if the organization wants to attract, develop, and retain talent. All departments must understand the business system that UX operates within and the commitments the UX team is responsible for.

Decisions rooted in expediency and time-to-market concerns can create UX risks that cannot be accurately measured. In short, you cannot validate an idea that was abandoned at birth. You need a different line of questioning to begin assessing UX risks to the business. For example, rather than ask what gain there is from a particular implementation, you might instead ask, "What does the user lose by not implementing the better solution?

UX work can be mapped to this categorization. There are the projects directly associated with the products that drive the business. There are ongoing design collaborations that are routine operations to stay in tune with users' needs and ongoing fixes listed in the backlog.

And unplanned work comes in the form of implementations that fell short of specs that invariably add to the UX debt. UX debt can cripple the natural evolution of a product. What should concern the entire organization is the unspoken awareness that certain task-flows in a product are clunky, or that the implementation of the UI is imprecise, and that there is a widening delta between the original intent and the current outcome. Indeed, the most egregious situation is when UX debt has translated into usability issues that development and testing teams have learned to live with—but users haven't.

The backlash comes in the form of their pressuring complaints, which lead to fixes complicated by compounded interaction dependencies.

When the quality and success of UX are quantified in the business's performance metrics, the organization's awareness evolves into a new mentality that produces higher quality. The best retort in The Phoenix Project comes to the glib and posturing adage, "Perfection is the enemy of good," to which one of the protagonists shoots back, "No, lack of competence is the enemy of good. This statement reads like a maxim that applies universally in all activities. In IT and UX, this takes on a more profound meaning.

What's ultimately a satisfying experience is the actual desired outcome, and that is independent of the internal workings of the organization. This is the nucleus of continuous delivery that UX, dev, and IT must internalize into their very psyche.

The most challenging aspect of this is adequately scoping the UX effort to allow design thinking to reveal the better solutions relative to development cycles. This can translate into devising a multi-tiered solution or accepting throwaway implementations.

Here again, Kim teaches that through IT problem-solving, this discipline can be instilled through a greater understanding of the workflow. In UX, work flows into development. Creating the faster flow is achieved by keeping the dev team abreast of design rationales and design intent in the most systematic and disciplined fashion.

As soon as a design concept has emerged, vet it with the dev team. No further elaboration in wireframing needs to commence until dev is fully on board with what they'll be committed to deliver. In a nutshell, Kim ties together the intricate challenge that spans all product-focused departments.

For an organization that's ambitious to lead, these are existential questions. The Phoenix Project gives us a glimpse into answers through a method of execution. This, right here, is the essence of continuous delivery : the willingness to experiment, the bias toward deploying, and the discipline to make things small and quick. UX is not simply a secondary supporting function.

Every organization that produces software should expect everyone it hires to have some experience in it. Continuous delivery is happening. Continuous design is being born. If it's not being born in your organization, then it's being born in someone else's while you're reading this. By current definition, you're either a DevOps organization or you're becoming one.

And if neither, you're dissolving. Gene Kim and co-authors tell all these stories. Take a deep dive into the state of quality with TechBeacon's Guide. Plus: Download the free World Quality Report Put performance engineering into practice with these top 10 performance engineering techniques that work. In the past, the customer would have to look up a phone number, speak to someone on the phone, then jot down that date and time on a piece of paper. You may initially think that a booking engine is a simple calendar with a form, but it depends on the type of business being run. For instance, a gym might have multiple personal trainers. Each of these employees needs their own schedules listed on the website. On the other hand, a dental office may need to show specific times and reveal the different types of services offered. For instance, some smaller companies may only need a simple, free calendar for accepting non-paying appointments. However, bigger brands will need a wider range of features with beautiful templates and high-powered communication tools. In Part 1 , we explored what a WordPress plugin is and how it functions. Unfortunately, as technology continues to adapt and change, a website can break if all components are not integrating seamlessly. Free WordPress plugins are no exception and often have a reputation for causing problems. The very nature of a plugin slows things down. While a plugin can sometimes extend and enhance the built-in operations, it can also duplicate the core function to make it an easier interface — leading to redundant processing slowing down your website. Too many plugins can also cause superfluous information loading, slowing things down as multiple versions of the same resource are loaded onto the site.

However, people quickly saw the benefits of its customizability and versatility and soon started using it for other website types, not just blogs. Nowadays, WordPress is the leading content management system globally, accounting for As the WordPress platform is open-source, it offers virtually unlimited customization possibilities.

However, life for the non-coders started to get much simpler with the appearance of pre-made themes and plugins. These gave people the ability to customize the platform simpler without needing any special coding skills. So, it became increasingly possible to get the website you wanted just by adding a suitable theme and some plugins to the base platform with no expensive software nerds needed.

The range of plugins available and what they can do is mind-blowing, ranging from search engine optimization SEO through mail integration to particular tasks such as restaurant menus, weather forecasts, or hair salon reservations.

It figures, therefore, that the more plugins you add, the slower things can potentially become. Thanks to the modern mobile generation we live in, people have less patience than they did just a few years ago. Consequently, page loading speeds are under increased scrutiny.

Minimizing the number of plugins can go a long way to ensuring your site speed is not unnecessarily impacted. You could also try looking at replacing several plugins with just a single multifunction one.

In the worst-case scenario, an attacker may be able to gain complete control of your website — scary stuff. Therefore, it figures that the more plugins you have installed, the more potential weak points you introduce into your website, swinging the door open wider to hackers. Our advice is to keep the number of plugins to the bare minimum and ensure that everything — plugins, themes, and the WordPress installation — is kept fully up-to-date, as updates often include security enhancements.

As you become more experienced with WordPress and your site, you will be able to make tweaks here and there until you reach the optimal number and combination of plugins. The WordPress directory is the biggest candy store for website owners and developers. The choice available is mind-boggling, and once the bare essentials are covered, there is always the temptation to add other functions just because you can. So, the very first question you need to ask yourself is, do you really need the extra functionality offered by a plugin?

We have shown you that there is no right or wrong answer to the question of how many WordPress plugins are too many. We have also pointed out that it is safer to be cautious than to pile on plugins just to dazzle your site users with tons of features. Think along the same lines as when buying a car. Do you really need that upgraded sound system when the stock one will do? You get the picture, right?

Hey Deborah. Our blog, PagePipe, has active plugins and loads in under 1 second on good days. We share our server with 24 other domains.

This can come from laziness, ignorance or in some cases, expiring licenses which no longer receive updates. Good point, Dan! I have 16 plugins at the moment and all serve a purpose. My goal is to keep it below I agree with stated above. But I still like to keep number of installed and activated plugins low as it decreases chance of plugin conflicts and makes debugging way easier. I try to run as few as possible and always keep them updated.

I always Try to install as less plugin as i can, The more plugin I use the more will be processing time of any client request and it will end up with poor ranking on SERP. I run several multisite networks with over plugins available on the network and various combinations of those plugins are configured on subsites across the networks.

Many of the subsites on the networks may have to plugins active on them. Most are well maintained, updated frequently and have active support which speaks highly of their developers.

So if having too many plugins can cause such a problem that you don't have excess plugins running for no reason.

WordPress Plugins: 13 Tips for Making the Right Choice

Here are some proven methods to get you started. Just as your car, your home, your office, and the cash that you carry around with such pride. It all comes down to what you do with it. What you do to protect it, and how aware you are of the consequences of not doing so. Remember what Kevin Mitnick used to say, and what still is one of the most relevant statements of IT security? WordPress itself is just a beginning. Then comes the most important part: making yourself and your employees minimize the danger of someone else penetrating your CMS.

When you get a huge influx of traffic, the inability to load your site quickly could cause your server to crash. A slow website can be caused by any number of things: cheap web hosting , too many scripts and large images, excessive redirects, or just bloat. Since WordPress is open-source software with the ability to be customized, the core software is generally minimalistic, with the idea that you add on to it the additional features you need to run your site. WordPress plugins give you the ability to add in features you need; but some of them can do too much or can be replaced with simpler code in your functions.

Is it true, though? And just how much do plugins affect WordPress performance?
