The future of web design 2015
Summary: Our analysis of minimalist websites revealed the defining features of minimalism: flat design, limited color schemes, few UI elements, use of negative space, and dramatic typography. By Kate Moran. This article is the second in a series devoted to the understanding of minimalism in web design.
In order to reduce a website to only its most necessary elements, designers must accept a cascade of consequences that impact both the user interface UI and the content of the site. Many of the visual-design characteristics commonly associated with minimalism are choices that serve the core strategy of minimalism particularly well, and so have been adopted along with minimalism in most instances. Web design, like language, is defined by the way people use it.
To more clearly define what constitutes a minimalist design in practice, we analyzed the design characteristics of a sample of minimalist websites. Sites were selected for the study if they were either identified by an outside web-design expert as minimalist, or were included in an online gallery for inspirational minimalist sites.
In this study, we analyzed sites that are known to employ minimalist design, not sites that are known to be highly profitable. As discussed further below, our other research suggests that while some of these design ideas can support business goals, others can hurt your profitability. So what features were present in most of these designs?
Over the past few years, there has been an overwhelming shift in the design community away from skeuomorphism, towards purely digital representations of things without physical metaphors. Flat design generally refers to the textures, icons, or graphics in an interface. Minimalist design applies to the larger or overarching content, feature, and layout strategies.
An interface may be flat without being minimalist. We believe that a better approach is a compromise between flat and skeuomorphic—a mostly flat design, but with clickable elements that users can recognize easily.
Subdued color schemes are intended to avoid upstaging the content—which, in the case of images, can still be brightly colored. Many minimalist designs are either monochromatic, or use only one bold color as an accent, and use it to—sparingly—highlight the most important elements of the site. These accented elements are usually clickable. When assessing the use of color in the sample websites, we looked at background colors, logos, navigational elements, iconography, and typography, but did not consider content images like photographs as part of the color palette.
Designers who adopt a minimalist design strategy must consider each element in their interfaces and eliminate any that are not required to support the core functionality or message of the website. To make this characteristic measurable, we focused on assessing whether or not the interface contained graphic elements that did not serve any obvious purpose. The more stuff there is in a user interface, the more stuff users need to process. This is where designers can get distracted by the pursuit of a clean, modern, minimalist interface—and end up cutting out useful content.
Variations in font size, weight, and style become crucial in helping users understand the hierarchy and relative importance of text. Using images for text may allow you to use custom fonts, but it will add to page load time, will require extra considerations for scaling at different resolutions, and can cause accessibility issues. Using web fonts is a better solution , but bear in mind that web fonts can have detrimental performance effects as well. Remember, drawing attention to bold typography is only useful when that text communicates meaningful information.
Beware of going overboard on the fancy typography: users can ignore overformatted text if it looks too much like advertising. Some designers also include the following characteristics as minimalist. The presence of a large background image or background videos enabled by HTML5 is one of the most debated characteristics of minimalist Web design.
Additionally, some designers may hope that loud background images will keep otherwise minimalist designs from being too boring or stark. If you choose to use a background photo or video with your minimalist design, keep the following points in mind:.
Just as flat design is a reaction to skeuomorphism, minimalism is a reaction to maximalism. In both cases, we strongly advise a balanced approach. The Characteristics of Minimalism in Web Design
First, let me introduce myself. This may not sound like a lot of experience, but finishing my second year as a developer has been a huge milestone for me. This is because I had no real experience doing web development — and not much programming experience in general beyond some basic C and Java training I got from a few online courses. So today, I decided to change that. I know that there are a lot of articles like this, but not very many of them discuss the process with the benefit of an extra two years of hindsight. Being one of the fastest growing digital agencies in Surrey, and specialising in providing top-tier, bespoke, web design services as we do, our team of web designers and web developers are always searching for the latest online trends. Simplicity, reliability and accessibility are the three main ways in which web design has recently shown signs of improving, with functionality and user experience also playing a key role. The focus now is consequently on more minimalistic web design, which creates a site with a cleaner look and feel. With the growing number of web sessions carried out on mobile devices such as iPhones and tablets, user navigation is key in contemporary website development. Use of parallax which is essentially an interactive web-graphic in web design is becoming steadily more popular, as it allows for a more interactive and engaging website, getting the users stuck in and engrossed in the page.

Instead, an API producer should bundle the API itself with useful and comprehensive documentation and tools such that any developer who stumbles upon the Web service can begin building with the API as easily as possible. API design refers to the decisions that go into each of the structural and functional characteristics of the Web service itself.
This frees up the API producer from providing basic user support. By providing useful and commonly requested information up front, API producers allow potential API consumers to easily prototype and build new products with less friction and with more success. API documentation consists of a range of instructions, examples, and other resources that should facilitate developers in as many ways as possible.
Documentation should explain the purpose of the API as well as provide ample guidance for using the API such that developers at all skill levels can easily and comfortably use the service. Each API is different and may be best served by combining particular elements for the documentation package. With each element, seek to flesh out examples, potential questions, and any other needs that a developer might have. By doing so, you will earn the attention and appreciation of developers who can then greatly expand the value of your API.

But did you check that the software development was up to par and can be maintained well? So, your company and team have a limited opportunity to please users before they move to a competitor product. Many companies lean on their software dev team to do tests as the project progresses, but that subtracts the time they can spend on development. Quality assurance QA or quality control QC refers to quality management that ensures that all software quality standards are met. At the base, QA is the part of software development that checks the software conforms to all requirements. Depending on how your company structures the software dev team, quality assurance could occur at the end of the project.
Is QA necessary, or should developers do their own testing?
Quality is important especially when it comes to software development. Every tech company has realized the importance of establishing a QA team dedicated to ensuring quality in their products. Since Quality Assurance has become so important, we at Seamgen want to give you some of our best practices when it comes to QA. Establishing a process is key to optimizing quality assurance across the development of products.
It will end up saving the project both time and money as functionality is being implemented. We at Seamgen are also a stickler for making sure our quality is perfect when delivering a product, and that is why we like to test them on real devices to ensure the product works across different types of platforms and processors.
For example in mobile development, it is important that we see what the users are seeing whether they are using iOS or android operating systems. Automation testing plays a monumental part to staying efficient. The QA team will want to use automation when the functionality is imperative and risk based. Having reusable regression automation testing allows us to ensure quality on parts of the project that have been seen before while also pointing out new complex issues for the QA team to solve.
Is your current testing process allowing you to catch every bug before each new release? Do you feel that testing is slowing you down? These best QA practices are going to change the way you incorporate testing into your development process. Quality assurance QA testing is the process of ensuring that your product is of the highest possible quality for your customers. QA is simply the techniques used to prevent issues with your software product or service and to ensure great user experience for your customers.

Why is Quality Assurance Important in Software Development?
As our world becomes increasingly digital, there has been an increase in the number of applications being developed for various platforms. No matter whether these apps are for a desktop, laptop, TV, refrigerator, car, or mobile device, they all require a team of testers and developers in order to ensure that the app is completed within time, scope, and budget. The quality of the applications also needs to be top-notch to ensure that no bugs escape out into the wild. However, this may not be as easy as it sounds since the process of developing an application for any platform involves a lot of people working together to ensure that the final product is presentable and usable.

The quality of your website speaks volumes to your potential customers. So when discussing web development , you will definitely hear about quality assurance as an indispensable part.
More often than not, developers who are backed up by one or more quality assurance QA testers don't fully test their code. That's because sometimes they don't want to spend the time, or they'd prefer to rely on QA to find defects. Or it's one way to appear productive by completing more stories or tasks. And, occasionally, some developers think that their code is flawless. But even small bugs can lead to big business problems.
Everyone has the right to a single mistake, but not websites. Website Quality Assurance exists in order to avoid the high costs of correcting errors in the work of the website. You are creating a website for it to work and generate income, right? If it does not work correctly, then you can lose more than half of your customers.
