Compare The Best Website Builders

Today all you need to do is point and click, and you can take a nice looking picture. The short answer is it depends on who you hire. But assuming you hire someone good, what a web designer or design agency brings to the table can be a lot. First, a good web designer can take your vision and bring it into reality. They can take the concept that is stuck in your head or heart and turn it into a living breathing design that you can see. A good web designer can also help you have a unique and interesting design that sets you apart from your competitors.

Hiring a web designer would be the equivalent of engaging a professional wedding photographer to take artistic and beautiful photos that you could treasure for the rest of your life. Should everyone hire a professional website designer? Not really. Should your business falls under one of these categories you should probably go with a website builder:. How Can We Help? Unless you have a mature blog with an established audience, there is no need to professionally design your site at first.

Once you have an established customer base and are generating revenue, then you should probably look into upgrading your site with a professional design. You should use a website builder to see how the idea is received.

The bottom line is — paying for a website should pay for itself. If hiring a web designer is a money losing proposition, stick with a website builder. Opportunity cost is when you not only consider your return on investment for a particular transaction. But when you compare all options available, to determine what the best overall course of action is. Which one is the better value? In scenario B if the business lost even one million dollar contract it might otherwise have won with a more professional looking site, that cost needs to be factored in as well.

The SEO benefits alone are worth the cost. If you are a consultant, a real estate professional, a lawyer , accountant or any other solo business owner offering professional services, then you would probably be better off with a professionally designed website than going with a website builder. By having such a high transaction value, if you could generate just one additional sale by having a better website then the investment would pay for itself.

As stated before, your website is an investment. And like any good investment, it needs to generate a positive return. Meaning your new website should bring in more additional revenue, that you would not otherwise have gotten, than the cost of the website itself. The main benefit is obviously the price. For a small investment, you can have a website up on the web. Fast You can have your new site up within a day using a website builder. When hiring a design firm, it will typically take weeks from start to launch.

Decent design Many of the current website builders offer decent looking design and templates. The key to making them work is to copy the template design exactly. Any additions you make to the design will probably only hurt. Disadvantages Not professionally designed While many website builder templates look good, few of them look great.

Most website builder templates are all beginning to look the same giving them a generic and unoriginal feel. Free Custom Mockup of your new website delivered in 7 days!

It can be frustrating to work within a rigid framework trying to realize a vision you have for the site. Time intensive What is your time worth to you? What else could you be doing with that time? This all needs to be factored into the true cost of the website project.

Advantages and disadvantages in web designer vs website builder Still not sure whether or not you should hire a professional website designer? Here is a look at some advantages and disadvantages of going that route:. When you hire a website designer, you are hiring a professional. Someone whose job it is to understand design best practices, fonts, colors, harmony and balance.

They also have an understanding of user interface, information architecture and how design impacts visitor flow. All of these skills are brought to the table when you hire a professional. Unique design Remember the Matrix Reloaded? Yes, it was a terrible movie. But remember when Agent Smith started cloning himself that the matrix was overrun by a sea of Agent Smiths?

Most website builder platforms have minimal SEO tools. Not fun. Saved time Is your time worth anything to you? When you hire a web designer you are buying your life back, or at least many hours of it, by paying a professional to deliver results rather than spending countless hours banging your head against a wall or teaching yourself a new skill that has nothing to do with your profession. Disadvantages Higher upfront cost The main challenge with hiring a professional design firm is to pay the high upfront cost.

Because of this, the quality varies quite a bit when choosing a designer. Two things to judge a design firm by are their portfolio and their reviews. Wide range in pricing How much does a website cost?

Talk to 5 different design agencies, and you will get five wildly different quotes. It can be a real challenge knowing what a good price is when hiring a web designer You might not own your website Be careful when hiring a design firm. Make sure you have full ownership of your site once the website has been launched. There are design firms out there that handcuff you into an ongoing maintenance plan and do not give you ownership rights to the site.

How to add a widget to a wordpress theme

Customizing the WordPress footer by adding widgets

WordPress widgets are incredibly useful. They let you add all kinds of extra content to your website outside the body of the post or page itself, encouraging users to get information, follow links, or take action. How to add them to your site, how to create widget areas to put them in, how to install plugins that give you more of them, how to code your own widgets, and lots more. In WordPress, widgets are snippets of content that live outside the flow of the page or post content.

Widgets contain information, navigation or media that is separate from an individual post or page. In most cases, each widget will be displayed on every page in the site, but you can also register widget areas for specific pages such as the home page.

WordPress comes with a bunch of widgets preloaded so you can use them without having to install any plugins or write any code. But you can also add lots more widgets by installing plugins or coding your own.

You should use a widget whenever you want to add extra content to one or more pages in your site and when I say page, I include posts, archives etc. Think about how many users will need access to each widget and how important it is when you decide where to place it. Widgets in the sidebar will be more prominent than those in the footer, which some users may not even see.

So a latest posts widget or a call to action widget might be better off in the sidebar where people have more chance of interacting with them, while a social media feed could go in the footer.

A great use of a widget is to encourage people to take action, and you can do this with a call to action widget. Your widget could be a simple button, or you could create something more bespoke using a text widget or HTML widget, or even an image widget, all of which come pre-installed with WordPress. There are a few options for this: the Categories or Tag Cloud widgets and the Navigation Menu widget.

You could even add your main navigation menu to a widget area, although this will only work if you have a small navigation menu. Adding a navigation menu to the footer of your site will encourage people reaching the end of a post to navigate around your site. Alternatively, you can use the built-in Categories widget to display a list of the categories in your site, or the Tag Cloud widget to make it easy for people to access tag archives.

Alternatively, all the social media platforms have their own plugins, available free via the plugin directory. Or you can find third party plugins that will let you customize the way you display your social media feed. You could put this in the sidebar where people will easily be able to see it, or in the header for added visibility if your theme includes a widget area there.

If you want people to contact you, ask questions or sign up to a mailing list , you could add a form to your sidebar. If your business is based in a physical location and you want people to be able to find you easily, adding a map widget to your site will help. The Login with Ajax widget gives you a login form in your widget meaning people can log into your site from any page.

If you want to boost the power of your search widget, you can install the free WP Google Search widget, which uses Google search. The more there are, the less likely users are to notice them. Instead, focus on two or three key widgets for the sidebar.

Sometimes these will offer more functions or a more intuitive interface. You can add widgets to any active widget areas provided by your theme. Depending on your WordPress theme , you might find you have widget areas in multiple places. Most themes have widget areas in the sidebar and footer. But some also have them in other places, like below or above the content or in the header.

I use a theme with multiple widget areas in lots of places. You can see in the screenshot below that there are widget areas above and below the content, in the header, below the main footer. If you want to add widgets to other places in your site it makes sense to find a theme that has multiple widget areas. The best way to do this is to use a framework theme. And here is the code in my header. If you want to add extra widget areas in your theme, you need to add the same kind of code.

This makes it easier to see how your widgets will look and to move them around between widget areas if you want to. This will open the Customizer. Now click the Widgets option and you will see a list of all the widget areas in your theme. Click the widget area where you want to add a widget and click the Add a widget button. This gives you a list of all the widgets available for your site. You can reorder widgets by dragging them up and down on the left-hand side or by clicking the Reorder link below the list of widgets and then clicking the arrows to move them up and down.

To edit the settings for the widget, find that widget in the widgets screen or the customizer, and simply edit any options provided. Need a blazing-fast, secure, and developer-friendly hosting for your client sites? Kinsta is built with WordPress developers in mind and provides plenty of tools and a powerful dashboard.

Depending on whom you ask, web designers seem to do it all these days. The truth is a bit more complicated than that. It takes a lot of planning, content creation, artistic effort, coding and hired specialists to make a website a reality. Web designers are one of those specialists, but they usually have a very specific role within the whole process. Otherwise, you might end up wasting time and money. Web design is the process of establishing the aesthetic appearance of a web page, including how content is arranged and how the elements of design are implemented.

This means they can be responsible for choosing everything from the photos and imagery, the fonts, shape language, color scheme, buttons, as well as how all of these elements fit together. They use design software such as Photoshop or Sketch to create mockups, or image-based representations of how the final website should look once code is applied. With that said, web designers are typically not responsible for building a working website—they focus on establishing the visual design only.

With all that said, do take these job descriptions with a grain of salt. They are generalizations and describe the traditional definitions of these roles. There can be overlap between roles—most web designers do their own market research, have graphic design and UX, and some can even double as developers especially on the front end. It is also not uncommon for companies or clients to combine roles and responsibilities depending on their budget. Always make sure before you start a project that you are on the same page about your expectations for the role.

If you are thinking of becoming a web designer yourself, you should consider the kind of skills you will need in order to set yourself up for success. Although a college degree is certainly not a bad idea, it is increasingly common these days for designers to be self-taught, and there are plenty of web design tutorials available online.

In particular, they should know how to strategically leverage the principles of design to create a desired effect on a viewer. This also includes knowledge of design history, knowing which design trends are still useful and which are overdone and tired.

Photoshop is one of the most common software used for web design, but UX prototyping apps like Sketch have become increasingly popular amongst web designers. For more on this, refer to our list of the best web design software. Although coding should typically be left to a developer, creating a website is a technical undertaking no matter which way you slice it. Some design effects or textures may be difficult to implement with code, and some may result in file sizes that slow the loading of a web page.

If you need to hire a web designer or you are curious about the options web designers have to find work, there are a number of possibilities. Many work in agencies and can be found through referrals from past employers or other colleagues.

You can work with designers two ways: search for designers and contact one to negotiate rates and work one-to-one in a secure project space or you can run a contest in which you submit a project brief and multiple designers compete by submitting sample web page designs. They are largely responsible for the visual construction of a web page.
