Web design refers to the design of websites that are displayed on the internet. It usually refers to the user experience aspects of website development rather than software development. Web design used to be focused on designing websites for desktop browsers; however, since the mids, design for mobile and tablet browsers has become ever-increasingly important. A web designer works on the appearance, layout, and, in some cases, content of a website.
What does a web site designer need to know
9 Principles of Good Web Design
Web design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of websites. The different areas of web design include web graphic design; user interface design UI design ; authoring, including standardised code and proprietary software ; user experience design UX design ; and search engine optimization. Often many individuals will work in teams covering different aspects of the design process, although some designers will cover them all.
Web design partially overlaps web engineering in the broader scope of web development. Web designers are expected to have an awareness of usability and if their role involves creating markup then they are also expected to be up to date with web accessibility guidelines.
For example, Netscape 1. Throughout to the browser wars began, as Microsoft and Netscape fought for ultimate browser dominance. On the whole, the browser competition did lead to many positive creations and helped web design evolve at a rapid pace. In , Microsoft released its first competitive browser, which was complete with its own features and HTML tags. It was also the first browser to support style sheets, which at the time was seen as an obscure authoring technique and is today an important aspect of web design.
In , Netscape released Netscape Communicator code under an open source licence , enabling thousands of developers to participate in improving the software. However, these developers decided to start a standard for the web from scratch, which guided the development of the open source browser and soon expanded to a complete application platform. Programs like Acid1 , Acid2 , and Acid3 were created in order to test browsers for compliance with web standards. It was also the first browser to fully support the PNG image format.
Since the start of the 21st century the web has become more and more integrated into peoples lives. As this has happened the technology of the web has also moved on. There have also been significant changes in the way people use and access the web, and this has changed how sites are designed. Since the end of the browsers wars [ when?
Many of these are open source meaning that they tend to have faster development and are more supportive of new standards. The new options are considered by many [ weasel words ] to be better than Microsoft's Internet Explorer. With the improvement of 3G and LTE internet coverage, large part of website traffic became mobile-generated.
Other tools web designers might use include mark up validators and other testing tools for usability and accessibility to ensure their websites meet web accessibility guidelines. Marketing and communication design on a website may identify what works for its target market. This can be an age group or particular strand of culture; thus the designer may understand the trends of its audience. Designers may also understand the type of website they are designing, meaning, for example, that B2B business-to-business website design considerations might differ greatly from a consumer targeted website such as a retail or entertainment website.
This drives the trend for a more universal user experience and ease of access to accommodate as many users as possible regardless of user skill. Advanced interactive functions may require plug-ins if not advanced coding language skills.
Choosing whether or not to use interactivity that requires plug-ins is a critical decision in user experience design. If the plug-in doesn't come pre-installed with most browsers, there's a risk that the user will have neither the know how or the patience to install a plug-in just to access the content.
If the function requires advanced coding language skills, it may be too costly in either time or money to code compared to the amount of enhancement the function will add to the user experience. There's also a risk that advanced interactivity may be incompatible with older browsers or hardware configurations. Publishing a function that doesn't work reliably is potentially worse for the user experience than making no attempt. It depends on the target audience if it's likely to be needed or worth any risks.
Page pixel width may also be considered vital for aligning objects in the layout design. The most popular fixed-width websites generally have the same set width to match the current most popular browser window, at the current most popular screen resolution, on the current most popular monitor size.
Most pages are also center-aligned for concerns of aesthetics on larger screens. Fluid layouts increased in popularity around to allow the browser to make user-specific layout adjustments to fluid layouts based on the details of the reader's screen window size, font size relative to window etc.
They grew as an alternative to HTML-table-based layouts and grid-based design in both page layout design principle and in coding technique, but were very slow to be adopted. Accordingly, a design may be broken down into units sidebars, content blocks, embedded advertising areas, navigation areas that are sent to the browser and which will be fitted into the display window by the browser, as best it can.
Although such a display may often change the relative position of major content units, sidebars may be displaced below body text rather than to the side of it. This is a more flexible display than a hard-coded grid-based layout that doesn't fit the device window. In particular, the relative position of content blocks may change while leaving the content within the block unaffected. This also minimizes the user's need to horizontally scroll the page.
Responsive web design is a newer approach, based on CSS3, and a deeper level of per-device specification within the page's style sheet through an enhanced use of the CSS media rule.
Most site layouts incorporate negative space to break the text up into paragraphs and also avoid center-aligned text. The page layout and user interface may also be affected by the use of motion graphics. The choice of whether or not to use motion graphics may depend on the target market for the website. Motion graphics may be expected or at least better received with an entertainment-oriented website. However, a website target audience with a more serious or formal interest such as business, community, or government might find animations unnecessary and distracting if only for entertainment or decoration purposes.
This doesn't mean that more serious content couldn't be enhanced with animated or video presentations that is relevant to the content. In either case, motion graphic design may make the difference between more effective visuals or distracting visuals. Motion graphics that are not initiated by the site visitor can produce accessibility issues.

In this blog post, we will cover the different ways to enable positive teamwork through soft skills. Active listening is focusing on what the other person has to say instead of thinking about what to say next. The skillset of active listening positively influences the relationship with clients, leads to a productive group discussion with team members, helps to gather feedback from users, and gaining insights from other colleagues.
Some of the major liners from the article are —. Not all ideas during the discussion may seem workable or worth investing time in, but explorations and refinements are an unmissable part of the design process. Keeping an open mind can fuel this step. An open-minded design discussion within the team is being willing to consider different approaches and different ways of thinking.
It is being flexible and adapting new ideas and experiences. A designer with an open mind is a critical thinker, reasons creativity with logics and embraces the unexplored ways of doing things. Empathy in a team is developed through active listening and observing. This skill needs curiosity and sincerity to create a connection while working together.
By politeness is it to not cut off another person in the middle of a discussion, don't prove a point by proving your colleague wrong. The competition is not within the team, it's to deliver a unique experience and delivering a product as per the user's needs.
It's important to make a switch from "I to We". Make every piece of communication a seamless experience. This skill is essential because how you communicate, present your work and ideas really changes the way people perceive you as a professional. As you make it more enjoyable and stressfree it improves your credibility as a designer.
Self-learning helps when one encounters problems with new software, jargons, programs, management, organizing and so on. By enabling design with skills and willpower a designer can learn and contribute efficiently to their team and projects. Initiate changes, introduce your new learnings and lead by example for everyone around you to grow. There is nothing that the internet doesn't know. It only requires intent, self-discipline and curiosity to grow at your own volition.
Once you understand your team members boundaries and convey yours, respect them. Holding on to a mistake encourages negativity, lack of collaboration, disorientation during discussions and passive-aggressive behavioural issues. When people in an organisation remember every small slip, they cause more harm to the team than the person who did or did not do the mistake.
Understand the core values Understanding business values and user needs and finding the middle ground between them should be a part of a designer's skill set. Respect Boundaries Workplace boundaries define and develop a meaningful relationship between team members, clients, managers and other colleagues while also maintaining positive personal energy and flexible limits at work. Mentioning some favourites from an article from Quartz, How to set healthy boundaries at work — With communication and practice, you can learn to set self-honouring limits without alienating people or losing your paycheck.

A collection of insightful tips and guides to help you become a great designer. In this article, we'll take you on a journey explaining the different cropping options Illustrator offers. When working with raster graphics, designers had to switch between Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in order to crop an image. But not anymore. And ultimately, we will showcase how other design software apps, like Vectornator, compare with Adobe Illustrator in providing an enjoyable cropping workflow. When you're cropping, the basic goal is to remove unwanted areas from an image.
Pretty impractical if you ask us. But since Creative Cloud, Illustrator offers a simple crop tool as a way to crop raster images. What you need to remember is that vectors offer a lot more freedom when they are cropped, as they remain editable.
It is not as easy as the name suggests. If you want to crop a vector in a simple shape, you can also use their vector Crop tool, which is hidden in the Pathfinder control panel. First, create your shape by using the Rectangle or Ellipse Tool. Select both objects while making sure that the object you want to crop is underneath. The parts outside of the shape will be cropped destructively. It's similar to a clipping mask which we'll explain below. The only difference is that this method crops destructively, while a mask will not.
That's why we recommend using masks in all of your cropping ventures. When cropping, masks are going to be your best friend, so it's worth paying extra attention here. The best aspect of a clipping mask is that your images can be cropped into any custom shapes you want. Anything from circles, diamonds, hexagons, or the shape of a logo. A clipping mask can take any shape or form. First, you have to create the shape which you want to use as a cropping shape.
This is also known as a clipping path. If you have the shape already simply add it to your canvas on top of the object you want to crop. Now you can see your cropped image. First, draw the shape in which you want to crop your image or import a preexisting shape into your canvas and color it black or white. With opacity masks, white means that the image will be opaque in that area.
Black signifies that the part of the image will be completely transparent. Grays indicate a fade from opaque to transparent or a gradient. Select both the image and the shape. A new panel will appear. There you will have to click Make Mask , but make sure the Clip checkbox is activated. To crop an image in Illustrator you can also go for the quick and dirty Illustrator Artboard alternative. This will only work with rectangular crops, of course. Your graphic is still pretty much whole on the page, just outside the edges of the Artboard.
The method is very simple. Click on the Artboard icon and change its shape to the area you want to crop. Then export the file! The process is much simpler than it might sound initially. Create a shape that covers the entire size of your image by using the Rectangle Tool. This will guarantee that the aspect ratio is maintained. Vectornator is - like Illustrator - a vector-based tool. Using the Clipping Mask function in Vectornator gives you unlimited options to crop your image.
No hidden menus, or unnecessary clutter. Even a beginner will be able to navigate the interface very easily. The app has a very flat learning curve.
Select the Shape Tool in the Toolbar. Set the number of polygon sides to five with the Tool Slider. Click and drag on the canvas to create the shape. Use the Selection Tool to move, scale, and rotate the Polygon Shape.
Select the vector masking shape and move it to the bottom of the layer stack in the Layers Tab, below the imported raster image. Position the masking vector shape on the canvas. The imported raster image is now only visible within the boundaries of the masking shape.
