WWII M1912 US Military Shotgun (That Other Winchester Trenchgun You Always Forget About)

Today I thought it might be a nice change of pace to get up close and personal with Winchester's other 12 gauge trench shotgun, why not? We always talk about the M1897 (M97) of WWI fame, but what about its concealed hammer younger brother, the Model 1912 (M12) from WWII?
Not much is out there on these, and some of what is circulating is frankly just wrong. So lets talk about development, numbers built, military service, and ways to ID an original example.
