Dark and moody interiors can be challenging to get right, but they evoke a whole new sense of calm and enclosure when they're done right. Chiverton Architects was engaged in designing a rear extension to a heritage home in Middle Park, Australia, and exploring multiple interior design options with the clients loving the black scheme.

What makes this dark interior work so effortless is the amount of natural light Chiverton Architects has been able to weave in cleverly. The Mondrian-inspired windows to the rear and side on the first floor allow light in, but the perforated gangway and void space bring all the light into the living area. Combine these thoughtful design ideas with a client who is also a builder with strong attention to detail, and you have a home extension that sings.
