OFFS talk : Scott Wilson on Environmental Impacts of Plastics and Microplastics

On Monday 28th March 2022 Scott Wilson spoke to the society about the environmental impacts of plastics and microplastics. His talk included source tracking, load quantification and ecological impact assessment, litter bin and waste infrastructure audits and monitoring programme design

Dr Wilson is a Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie University’s Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences and Director of The Litter Lab. He has over 20 years of research experience in ecotoxicology, ecological assessments, and water quality monitoring. He has been prominent in the development and use of bioindicators and sensors for the assessment of tropical and temperate waters.

Dr Wilson is also currently the Research Director of the Australian Microplastic Assessment Project (AUSMAP), a nationwide citizen science project identifying microplastic hotspots and working with stakeholders on source reduction. He is also assessing the biological impacts of marine debris and micro-plastic to aquatic biota and determining the source, sink, and patterns of movement of litter and debris through a catchment and near-shore environments.
