NASA Space Apps Challenge 2021 - Team HackOnCloud

Published
Happy and proud to be part of the team (together with Peter Le ,Anh Dung Tran, Dzung Nguyen, David Nguyen, Thanh Dinh) to represent Singapore as the Global Nominee for the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2021. This is the largest annual space & science hackathon in the world and was hosted over the weekend of 2 Oct - 3 Oct with more than 28,000 registrants spanning 162 countries and territories.

With the recent developments of new technologies and consumer trends towards green energy, homeowners, and businesses are considering and researching adopting solar power. However, there is still a big knowledge gap between the #solarenergy service providers and consumers within the South East Asia region.

We want to address this gap. Given a location and the expected monthly electricity consumption, this application provides a graphical display of the "available sunshine" for the past year, along with recommendations for the best configuration of solar panels. All information/data is retrieved in real-time from NASA Power Web Services and is fed to our own developed predictive models.

Our team believes that this would help users with considering and making better investments for the future. Applications and main user groups could be businesses that are planning to build solar-powered factories, architects who want to design environment-friendly buildings / houses, homeowners who want to move to reduce their utilities bills, or city officials who want to plan for future green electricity infrastructure.

Our achievements in the 2 days of #nasaspaceappschallenge :
1. Development of a set of APIs that crawl information regarding solar panel specifications from local solar panel providers & Integration with NASA API to retrieve sunshine information, optimal angle information, solar irradiance given a location. Data crawling experts: Anh Dung Tran, Thanh Dinh

2. A predictive data model that forecasts the solar irradiance in the future and recommends the best solar panel setup for the users, leveraging on state-of-the-art statistical methods & data modelling tools. This was developed and benchmarked against the publicly available industrial information by our data and modelling wizards: David Nguyen, Anh Dung Tran

3. A Progressive Web App (PWA) that delivers all of the above and is accessible via anywhere by any device. In addition to this, rapid development an Android App that can be installed on any Android device. Server setup, integrations, front-end and back-end developments by technology gurus: Peter Le, Thanh Dinh, Dzung Nguyen

Technologies used: AWS API Gateway, AWS ECR, AWS Lambda, AWS S3, AWS Amplify, Progressive Web App Technology, Tableau, Google Map API, NASA Power Web Services API...
