Increasing violence against municipal employees – Prevention in Cologne

Published
In times of increasing violence and disrespect against public servants, many municipalities are working hard on different prevention approaches. While de-escalation courses are already offered in many municipalities, there is often a lack of standardised recording or procedures on how to deal with violence.

The city of Cologne is developing a procedure that systematically and digitally maps the entire process from reporting and recording to accident and criminal reports and support by psychological helpers and managers. The central recording of assaults as the first project module also allows conclusions to be drawn about the development of cases.

The lecture will look at the development of violence against employees and the current status of the central reporting and information system for threats to employees (ZeMAG) of the city of Cologne. Current projects and the draft law on the protection of employees in the public sector will also be discussed.
