A modern user interface can be pretty complicated. There are millions of functions and buttons that you need to push and thousands of forms that you need to fill.

That is why designers like us are making things easier for you to use—introducing the principle of the common region. It means that elements and buttons in the same group or category are expected to do similar things.

For example, an app would place profile settings and system settings in the same place because you would know that they are there in case you want to change anything.

On Instagram, post, like, and message icons are all on the top right side of the screen because these are the buttons you need to push if you want to send out messages; the icons on the bottom are for viewing pictures.

So you see, buttons with similar functions need to be put together to ease the learning curve of users. When using this principle, make sure you prioritize certain tasks over others; clearly identify the boundaries, and avoid placing too many dividers to avoid confusion.
