The agencies are funding 20 projects to be conducted across 24 institutions through the Disaster Resilience Research Grant DRRG program , which they manage together. These awards will support efforts to unlock fundamental scientific and engineering insights that will enhance building designs, codes and standards.

To identify the grant recipients, panels of reviewers with expertise in wildland-urban interface WUI fires, earthquakes, windstorms or community resilience assessed applications.

Of the 20 selected research projects, the eight funded by NIST are:. The research project also aims to establish methods of simulating the long-term performance of infrastructure under either current or future climate conditions. The analysis could provide fundamental insights into ember formation and transport, informing WUI community practices to mitigate the effects of wildfires. The results could transform building codes and standards, improving resilience among coastal communities.

Through physical experiments and computer modeling, the researchers aim to produce findings that can strengthen appropriate standards and codes for critical port infrastructure in the U. The findings from the project could be used to improve FRP selection for buildings in need of structural reinforcement.

The researchers intend to measure and compare how each material behaves while being impacted by small-scale, simulated waves. The researchers seek to develop a highly sophisticated evacuation computer model that could support planning for and action during wildfire evacuations.

The framework will incorporate housing resilience, supply chain and adaptive logistics operations. With this model, the researchers aim to aid disaster planning and decision-making as well as future building design. The results of this work could address a long-standing gap in our characterization of windstorms and inform building codes and standards.

Based on their findings, the researchers will identify, evaluate and recommend actions to enhance the resilience of these communities. The new information gained with these tools could fill a critical gap in our understanding of wildfires and benefit future fire behavior studies and fire model development.

These tools could be used to assess the efficacy of disaster preparedness efforts. Share Facebook. Credit: NIST. Released May 4,

Live roundtable: Intuitive and conscious hotel development. For years, I have spoken to designers, architects and suppliers about their passion to design the right way, but have suffered from innovative concepts being thrown out due to them not being deemed feasible. In , though, the ability to design and develop more meaningfully has become easier, thanks to a collaborative approach adopted by the industry — or forced due to social pressures — as many start to understand the path towards a circular economy. No one person can have a great idea, and I think that most of the projects we are working on are examples of that statement, where there have been great minds at the table, with different skills and specialties, from day one. Over the last few years, some of the projects that are arriving on the market are exceptional, and with more complexities, such as cost and sustainability incentives, that collaborative approach is required. Sometimes, there are up to 30 consultants on a project, which can only result in a positive evolution in hotel design moving forward. Matthew Voaden: I think the difficulty we always had, working on MEP, is that we were always brought into the project too late to make any changes to the foundations.

Scientists at Sheffield University have found a novel way of guiding anti-tumour viruses to their target. The project — led by researchers at Sheffield University — builds on progress in two key medical fields. The first involves viruses that specifically attack tumours. The anti-cancer viruses that are being exploited by the Sheffield group — who have been funded by Cancer Research UK — are known as oncolytic viruses. They occur naturally but can also be modified to improve their efficacy and to limit the chances of them infecting healthy cells. After infection with an oncolytic virus, a cancer cell will burst open and die. The US Food and Drug Administration has already approved the use of T-Vec, a modified herpes simplex virus that infects and kills tumour cells and is now being used to treat people with certain types of melanoma, a skin cancer. However, the Sheffield team — whose work has just been awarded the Roger Griffin prize for cancer drug discovery — want to expand the range of tumours that can be tackled this way.
