If you make a zip file and install using the Joomla installer then the language files should install automatically, because they are included in the language folder in the template. But if you upload by ftp you will need to copy the files from the template language folder to the site language folder.

You may get an error message when you do, but it should remove the entry, as long as it does that then you are OK. Then you should be able to re-install it.
