February RISD Makeathon brings together students from all majors to form groups, ideate, research, and gain hands-on experience in product development. Internships are important for future employment! Because they will probably give you a better answer than most individuals on CC. I think that Pratt will be a great choice for NYC-based internships, especially those focused on design. Pittsburgh and Atlanta are great cities for internships, but those two schools would also likely place you into some of the best ID internships in the country—CMU might have connections with Ford, Chevrolet, Ram, GM; GTech might have connections with big tech.

Thanks for the advice, I hope someone that attend one of those colleges could let me know about their experience. Despite its reputation as the best fine arts school in the country thanks, schoolstruggles! Frankly, I am not sure that other top fine arts schools are so different. All this means, however, is that it requires greater proactivity from the student and you hold the bonus chip - RISD!

But, loving the school. Without over-stereotyping, this is a problem for many art students. Their unabashed creativity and progressiveness translates well while in school. Blue hair, piercings, tatoos, and broad social fluidity are the norm.

For what comfort it may provide, most of my RISD peers were a bit outside social norms, including a large segment of introverts.

I think that art can lend itself to an introverted personality when so much of the creative process is solitary and focused. My strongest piece of advice is to take away everything your student can from the school. It is an amazing place with some phenomenal professors. Learn, learn, learn, and develop your skills and your portfolio. Thanks so much, it is hard to pay so much money and universities not to help students with an internship.

It should start even in the second or third year of college. Thanks for the advice one more time! It depends on what you all can afford, what school your child attends, online salary and career research, etc.

In this course, students will create two identity systems: one for an arts organization and one for a socially constructive campaign. This course will provide a fundamental understanding of how typefaces work in addition to understanding a tool that can further your design goals. We will use graphic design as a medium to ask questions about ethical concerns emerging from advancements in science and technology. We will develop a new design vernacular incorporating ideas from revolutionary recent developments in genetics, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. We will employ machine vision: microscopy, neuroimaging and NASA archives to create new fictional worlds in concert with the life forms around and inside us.

Graduate Study

RISD's graduate program in Graphic Design prepares students for professional practice by emphasizing the roles of social context, media and aesthetics in the production of visible language systems. As a reflection of the discipline itself, the program encourages a nimble and intelligent response to constant change and burgeoning technology, while building a strong foundation of formal, aesthetic and analytical knowledge. MFA candidates choose between two program tracks: a two-year option for students entering with undergraduate degrees in graphic design or other visual communication, and a three-year option for those with degrees in liberal arts, the sciences or fine arts. Built on a sequence of required courses, the curricula for both allow candidates to tailor individual courses of study through cross-disciplinary electives. Since these students typically also have at least two years of professional experience in the field, the program is designed to offer an opportunity for a more sustained and intensive investigation of critical graphic design thinking and making. Students in both tracks meet in the Graduate Seminar sequence, which initially builds a sophisticated sense of context through discussion of design history and contemporary critical issues, and later helps develop individual approaches to the exploration, investigation and construction of a well-designed thesis proposal. After successful completion of the intensive first year, three-year track students merge studies with two-year track candidates, taking one more typography course but otherwise sharing the same increasingly open curriculum.
